Sensors are key technology components for smart systems. The European sensors industry is market leader in many segments. SMEs play a key role in sensor development, sensor manufacturing (frequently serving market niches) and related components, as systems integrators and as providers of equipment, which comes with integrated sensors.

Smart wireless sensor systems are already today used in multiple industrial applications with huge environmental benefits: Machine health, process monitoring, process control, facility environment, tank level monitoring, relief valve or steam traps supervision, air quality monitoring, safety monitoring. As sensor technology covers a very broad field of applications this sector is a very inhomogeneous one.
